Lexi

12-15-08

Our lovely little Lexi completely shredded her crate pad over the past two months (yes, we're grateful it didn't take her 2 HOURS as some dogs are known to do!) so she got a nice new pretty red pad and thus far seems to be not inclined to shred it.

This week, Joe and I noticed that she's actually making overtures to Bridjett for playing. She wiggles her whole body, wags her tail ever so fast, and makes tiny little dips. I hope she doesn't give up trying because right now Bridjett doesn't want anything to do with Lexi - all Bri's invites to play since she'd gotten here were brushed off so I can't say as I blame Bri.

Lexi is learning better how to "settle" when she wants to snuggle. She's still miss squirmy wormy for about 10 minutes but after that she snuggles in really tight for a nice nap. Makes working on my needlepoint a bit easier now that she's finally learning she CAN just snuggle next to me and get the whole loving contact she craves so much.

Our lovely little Lexi is going to make someone who wants the ultimate velcro dog a VERY happy parent!

Lexi is a 7 year old purebred Border Collie who came to MBCR about two months ago. Not much is known of her earlier life other than she has been a mom at least twice and she spent the majority of her life out-of-doors. She's missing part of her left ear but no one seems to know how or why. It gives her a little cock-eyed look that's incredibly cute!

She is the classic black and white BC with freckles over her nose, legs and ruff. Her coat is still very thick due to living outside most of her life, but she's shedding a great deal now that she's living the luxurious life of an indoor dog (we think we've vacuumed up or brushed off at least 3 or 4 dogs' worth of fur already!). Lexi is a bit over-weight but thus far she's lost 2 pounds - she's got about 8 to go to put her at her optimum weight.

She's shy and extroverted by turns. She's funny and loving. She's excited to see you; she hates to see you leave. Her tail thumps happily for just about any reason from "hi how are you, Lexi girl?" to "yes, Lovely Lexi it's dinner time!" She snuggles with us every chance she gets; yet seems anxious for some reason at the contact. She's a bundle of contradictions; she has layers upon layers of personality waiting to burst forth. Lexi is very smart - she knows sit, stay (isn't too keen on that one but she does...mostly), front, off, and wait (that one's REALLY hard for her!). Lexi walks very well on leash.

She loves people and wants so very much to please her people. She craves human contact but thus far has shown little interest in playing with people or with her foster brother and sister. Lexi loves to de-stuff toys; she doesn't play with toys - yet; she's content to just have them and pull of their legs and arms and ears!

She kennels up very well when asked to do so. She eats in her crate and once the entire family goes to bed for the night, she sleeps crated. Her crate and under the living room end table are her safe spots. She'll lie in her crate while I'm on the computer or at my sewing machine. She snuggles under the table when people are in the living room; if she can't convince you to let her onto your lap!

Lexi is very much a velcro dog. She must be with her people, even if it's just in the same room. She's learning the value of waiting her turn for attention - she's learning to share her people with the other dogs, but this lesson is not one she's very keen to learn. Lexi seems to know the the attention she receives when she waits her turn or waits to be invited is much more loving; but it seems there are times that to Lexi any attention at all is better than no attention. She's not a "bad" dog; she is just having a difficult time learning to share her people. With that in mind, we feel that Lexi would be best suited to a single dog household; one with teenaged children (or none at all); and a home without cats.

Lexi will definitely need a fenced yard to play in as she likes to wander if given the chance. She escaped from our fenced-in yard only once; the only spot she could possibly find with a hole big enough was at the back gate. Yep, she found it! But we put a paving stone in the space; she seemed perplexed right afterwards as if thinking "well, where did that come from and who would put it there?" She went to the spot, stared at it, wandered to another part of the yard then back again to the spot to stare at it some more. Guess that stone's there to stay; sorry little Lexi!

We hope to find Lexi a home where she can be the center of attention; one where she can grow into the incredibly loving and intelligent dog we see lurking beneath the surface. She has wonderful potential and just needs to be given the opportunity in the right home to find herself so she can shine in all her Lovely Little Lexi glory.
